According to the Sunni Traditions

Verse 9: “Is he who supplicates in the watches of the night, prostrating and standing, apprehensive of the Hereafter and expecting the mercy of his Lord? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who possess intellect take admonition.”

It has been narrated to us from Yahya ibn Abd al-Hameed, from Jafar ibn Sulayman, from Thaabit, from Anas who said: “One day the Holy Prophet went to visit a man who was on his death bed and said to him, ‘In what state do you find yourself?’ The man replied, ‘In a state of hope and fear.’ The Holy Prophet then said, ‘These two traits do not gather in the heart of a servant at this time except that Allah will grant him that which he hopes for and protect him from that which he fears.’” [13]

Verse 10: “Say, [Allah declares]: ‘O My servants who have faith! Be wary of your Lord. For those who do good in this world there will be a good [reward], and Allah’s earth is vast. Indeed the patient will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.’”

The Holy Prophet is reported to have said: “On the Day of Judgement, Allah will install scales. Then the people who kept up their prayers will brought forward and they will receive their due reward; then those who used to give charity will be brought forward and they will be given their measured reward; then those who performed Hajj (Islamic pilgrimage) will be brought forward and they will be given their measured rewards; then those who witnessed calamities and misfortunes will be brought forward, no scale will be set up for them, nor will their book of deeds be opened, but the rewards of Allah will be poured upon them in abundance. For Allah has said, ‘Indeed the patient will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.’ Upon seeing the blessings and honour that those who witnessed trials and tribulations have attained, those who were prosperous in their worldly life will wish that they could rip their bodies into pieces with scissors.” [14]

Verse 20: “But as for those who are wary of their Lord, for them there will be lofty abodes with [other] lofty abodes built above them, with streams running beneath them —a promise of Allah, and Allah does not break His promise.”

Abdullah ibn Imam Ahmad says that Ibad ibn Yaqoob al-Asadi narrates from Muhammad ibn Fudayl, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaaq, from Al-Numaan ibn Sad, from Ali who said: “The Holy Prophet said, ‘In heaven there are rooms whose inside can be seen from the outside, and the outside can be seen from the inside.’ A Bedouin then asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are these rooms for?’ The Holy Prophet replied, ‘They are for those who speak kindly, feed the hungry, and stand in prayer during the night while the people are sleeping.’” [15]

Verse 22: “Is someone whose chest Allah has opened to Islam so that he follows a light from His Lord? So woe to those whose hearts have been hardened to the remembrance of Allah. They are in manifest error.”

When the Holy Prophet recited this verse it was asked of him, “O Messenger of Allah, how is the chest expanded?” The Holy Prophet replied, “Whenever the Divine light enters the heart of a person, his (spiritual) chest is expanded and opened.” It was then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what are the signs of this occurring?” The Holy Prophet replied: “Turning towards the eternal adobe and turning away from this transient world, and preparing for death before it approaches.” [16]

Verse 53: “Say [that Allah declares]: ‘O My servants who have committed excesses against their own souls, do not despair from the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah will forgive all sins. Indeed He is the All-Forgiving, the All-Merciful.”

Imam Ahmad says that Ishaaq ibn Isa narrated to us from Layth, from Muhammad ibn Qays, the narrator of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, from Abu Sirmah, from Abu Ayub al-Ansari who said at the time when death was approaching him: “I have hidden something from you that I had heard from the Holy Prophet - he said that if you people did not commit sins, then surely Allah would have created a people who would have sinned so that He could forgive them.” [17]

Verses 56-58: “Lest anyone should say, ‘Alas for my negligence in the vicinity of Allah! Indeed I was among those who ridiculed.’ Or say, ‘Had Allah guided me I would have surely been among the Allah conscious!’ Or say, when he sees the punishment, ‘If only there had been a second chance for me I would be among the virtuous!’”

Imam Ahmad narrates from Aswad, who narrates from Abu Bakr, from al-Aamash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah who quotes the Holy Prophet as having said: “Each of the people of hell will see one’s place in the paradise and will say, ‘If only Allah had guided me, this is where I would have been!’' So it will cause him great regret and sorrow. Similarly each of the people of paradise will see one’s place in hell and will say, ‘If Allah had not guided me, this is where I would have been,’ and he will be thankful and grateful.” [18]

Verse 60: “On the Day of Resurrection you will see those who attributed lies to Allah with their faces blackened. Is not the [final] abode of the arrogant in hell?”

Ibn Abu Haatim said that Abu Ubaydullah ibn Akhi ibn Wahab narrated to us from Ummi, from Isa ibn Abu Isa al-Khayyat, from Amru ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said that the Holy Prophet said: “Surely the arrogant will be gathered on the Day of Judgement resembling specks in the form of a human being, and every little thing will be bigger than them, until they enter a prison within hell known as Bulas, which is from the fires of the fire. There they will be quenched from the drippings of the inhabitants of hell and from putrid earth.” [19]

Verse 73: “Those who are wary of their Lord will be led to paradise in throngs. When they reach it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, ‘Peace be upon you! You are welcome! Enter it to remain [forever].’”

Imam Ahmad says that Abd al-Razzaq narrated from Mamar, from al-Zuhri, from Hamid ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah, who quotes the Holy Prophet as having said: “Whoever gives a pair of something from his wealth for the sake of Allah will be invited to paradise through its gates, and paradise possess many gates. Whoever was among the people of prayer will be invited through the Gate of Prayer. Whoever was among the people of charity, will be invited through the Gate of Charity. Whoever was among the people of jihad (holy struggle), will be invited through the Gate of Jihad. Whoever was among the people of fasting, will be invited through the Gate of Al-Rayyan.” Abu Bakr then asked: “O Messenger of Allah, the gate from which one is invited through is not of importance, however, will there be anyone who will be invited through all of the gates?” The Holy Prophet replied, “Yes, and I hope that you are one of them.” [20]

Benefits of Reciting this Surah

It has been narrated from Harun ibn Kharajah, from Abu Abdillah who said, “Whoever recites Surah al-Zumar, Allah will grant him honour in this world and in the hereafter, and will make him revered without the need of wealth or ancestry, such that when anyone sees him, they will be taken aback. His body will be made forbidden for the fire of hell; a thousand cities will be built for him in paradise - every city will contain a thousand castles, and every castle will contain a hundred hawra (heavenly brides), and with this he will have two flowing springs, two springs that are gushing, two dark green gardens, and hooris secluded in pavilions.” [5]

Verse 9: “Is he who supplicates in the watches of the night, prostrating and standing, apprehensive of the Hereafter and expecting the mercy of his Lord (like one who does not)? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who possess intellect take admonition.”

It has been recorded in the book Al-Kafi, with a chain of narrators reaching Abu Jafar who, in explaining the words of Allah: ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only those who possess intellect take admonition,’ that: “Surely we the Ahl al-Bayt are those who know, and our enemies are those who do know, and our Shia (followers) are those who possess intellect.” [21]

Verse 10: “Say, [Allah declares]: ‘O My servants who have faith! Be wary of your Lord. For those who do good in this world there will be a good [reward], and Allah’s earth is vast. Indeed the patient will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.’”

Abdullah ibn Sinan narrates that Abu Abdillah quotes the Holy Prophet as having said: “On the Day of Judgement, when the books will be opened and the scales fixed, no scales will be fixed for those who witnessed calamities and grief, nor will any book be opened for them.” The Holy Prophet then recited this verse, “Indeed the patient ones will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.” [22]

Verse 17: “As for those who stay clear of the worship of the Rebel and turn penitently to Allah, there is good news for them. So give good news to My servants.”

It has been reported that Abu Baseer narrated from Abu Abdillah who said: “They [those servants] are you, i.e. our followers - whoever obeys and follows a tyrant, it is as if he has worshipped him.” [23]

Verse 23: “Allah has sent down the best of discourses, a scripture [composed] of similar motifs, whereat quiver the skins of those who fear their Lord, then their skins and hearts soften to Allah’s remembrance. That is Allah’s guidance, by which He guides whomever He wishes; and whomever Allah leads astray, has no guide.”

It has been reported from Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib who quotes the Holy Prophet as having said: “Whenever the body of a servant trembles out of the fear of Allah, his sins will fall off from him just like dry leaves fall off from a tree.” [11]

Verse 60: “On the Day of Resurrection you will see those who attributed lies to Allah with their faces blackened. Is not the [final] abode of the arrogant in hell?”

Khaythamah narrates from Abdul Rahman who says that he heard Abu Abdillah having said: “Whoever narrates a hadith (tradition) from us, one day we will question him about it. If he spoke the truth from us, then indeed he has spoken the truth about Allah and the Holy Prophet; however, if he spoke a lie against us, then indeed he spoke a lie against Allah and the Holy Prophet. Whenever we speak and narrate, we not do not say that so and so said this, rather we say that Allah or the Holy Prophet said...” Imam then recited this verse, “On the Day of Judgement you will see those who attributed lies to Allah with their faces blackened.” Khaythamah then pointed to his ears and said: “May I become deaf if I did not hear this.” [24]

Verse 73: “Those who are wary of their Lord will be led to paradise in throngs. When they reach it, and its gates are opened, its keepers will say to them, ‘Peace be to you! You are welcome! Enter it to remain [in it forever].’”

In the book Al-Khisaal it is has been reported from Abu Abdillah, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ali ibn Abi Talib who said: “Indeed heaven has eight gates - one gate through which the Prophets and the truthful will enter from, one gate through which the martyrs and the righteous will enter into, and five gates will be for our Shias (followers) and lovers to enter through; and I will remain at the bridge, asking and praying to Allah saying, ‘O Allah! Keep safe my Shia, my lovers, my helpers and those who attached themselves to me in the world.’ A cry will then come from the depths of the Throne proclaiming: ‘Your supplication has been accepted and so too has your intercession for them.’ Also on that day every one of my Shias, my lovers, my helpers and those who defended me with their action or speech against those who attacked me will intercede for 70 000 of their neighbours and relatives. The remaining gate is for all of the other Muslims who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah, and did not have even an iota of grudge or malice in their hearts for us, the Ahl al-Bayt.” [25]
