Content

Important Concepts in this Chapter

Verses 1-9

The story of ‘the prohibition’ and the incident which took place between the Prophet and two of his wives. The Prophet had shared a secret with one of his wives, but it was revealed to the other wives. This incident came to be known famously as ‘the prohibition.’ Two of the wives of the Prophet objected to something halal that he was doing, which then led to him prohibiting it upon himself. In the first verse of this chapter, Allah points to this matter and questions him by asking: “Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives?” According to Ibn Kathir, in verse 4, the meaning of ‘Salih al-Momineen,’ is ‘the righteous among the faithful’ and it refers to either Abu Bakr and Umar, or Ali ibn Abi Talib. [4] In verse 6, Ibn Kathir believes that: «قُوا أَنْفُسَکمْ وَ أَهْلِیکمْ نارا», ‘Save yourselves and your families from a Fire’ means command yourself and your family to obey Allah and avoid sinning. [5]

Verses 10-12

The story of some dishonourable wives of Prophets such as Lut and Nuh; and the story of Asiya, the honourable wife of the disbeliever Firaun; and a short mention of Maryam binte Imran. Lut and Nuh’s wives, even though they were the spouses of Prophets, did not benefit at all from their marriages. Their names have been mentioned in these verses juxtaposed to Asiya, the wife of Firaun, who was a believer. This example is then extended to the wives of the prophet who became traitors and disbelievers. [6] Discussions on this Chapter

According to the Sunni Traditions

Verses 1-4: “O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful. Allah has certainly made lawful for you the dissolution of your oaths, and Allah is your Master and He is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise. When the Prophet confided to one of his wives a matter, but when she divulged it, and Allah apprised him about it, he announced [to her] part of it and disregarded part of it. So when he told her about it, she said, ‘Who informed you about it?’ He said, ‘The All-Knowing and the All-Aware informed me.’ If the two of you repent to Allah (it will be better for you), for your hearts have certainly swerved, and if you back each other against him, then [know that] Allah is indeed his guardian, and Jibrail, and the righteous among the faithful, and thereafter, the angels are his supporters.”

Ubayd ibn Umayr says that I heard Aisha claim: “The Prophet of Allah would stay with Zaynab binte Jahsh and have a honey drink with her. Then, Hafsa and I agreed that whichever one of us sees the Prophet first should say to him, ‘I smell the stench of maghafir* coming from you. Did you eat maghafir?’” Later, the Prophet saw one of them and she said that to him. He replied, “No, I had a honey drink with Zaynab binte Jahsh, but I will not ever drink it again.” Then, the following verses were revealed: ‘O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you…If the two of you repent to Allah (it will be better for you) for your hearts have certainly swerved…’ and was in reference to Aisha and Hafsa. [7]

  • Maghafir: a bad-smelling sap, gum, or resin that would leak from a tree in Hijaz called al-urfut.

Verse 6: “O you who have faith! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [assigned] angels, severe and mighty, who do not disobey whatever Allah has commanded them, and carry out what they are commanded.”

Abdul Malik ibn al-Rabi ibn Sabra narrates from his father, from his grandfather that the Prophet said: “Order children to pray when they turn seven, and when they turn ten, force them to do it.” [8]

Verse 8: “O you who have faith! Repent to Allah with sincere repentance! Maybe your Lord will absolve you of your misdeeds and admit you into gardens with streams running in them, on the day when Allah will not let the Prophet down and the faithful who are with him. Their light will move swiftly before them and on their right. They will say, ‘Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us! Indeed You have power over all things.’”

Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr heard Abu Dharr and Abu al-Darda quote the Prophet as having said: “I will be the first one allowed to perform sujood on the Day of Judgement, and I will be the first one allowed to raise my head. Then, I will look in front of me and recognize my nation among other nations; and I will look to my right and recognize my nation among other nations; and I will look to my left and recognize my nation among other nations.” A man asked: “O Prophet of Allah, how will you recognize your nation among other nations?” The Prophet replied: “[They will be known by] their illuminated, bright, white faces from the effects of purification and no one else from the other nations will be like that. I will recognize them through their books which will be given to them in their right hands; and I will recognize them by the marks on their heads which resulted from the effects of sujood; and I will recognize them by their light which will be shining in front them.” [8]

Verses 11-12: “Allah draws an[other] example for those who have faith: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, ‘My Lord! Build me a home near You in Paradise, and deliver me from Pharaoh and his conduct, and deliver me from the wrongdoing lot.’ And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded the chastity of her womb, so We breathed into it of Our spirit. She confirmed the words of her Lord and His Books, and she was one of the obedient.”

Akramah narrates from Ibn that the Prophet of Allah was drawing four lines in the ground and said, “Do you know what this is?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” So the Prophet told them: “The best women in heaven are: Khadijah binte Khuwaylid, Fatimah binte Muhammad, Maryam binte Imran, and Asiya binte Mazahim, the wife of Firaun.” [9]

According to the Shia Traditions

Verse 1: “O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? And Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Merciful.”

Ibn Sayar narrates from Abu Abdillah regarding this verse that: “Aisha and Hafsa came to the Prophet while he was with (his other wife) Mariyah. The Prophet said, ‘I swear to Allah that I will not come near her [for intercourse].’” Then Allah instructed him to break his oath and pay a kaffarah. [10]

Muhammad ibn Samaa narrates from Zurarah from Abu Jafar: “I asked him about a man who says to his wife, ‘You are haram for me.’” He said to me, “If it was up to me, I would have hit him, and I would have said to him - ‘Allah made her halal for you, so how can you make her haram?’ He has not done anything except say something false. He assumed that what Allah had made halal for him is now haram. No divorce has taken place and there is no kaffarah.” I recited the verse, “O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself] what Allah has made lawful for you,” and asked if there was a kaffarah for this. He replied, “The Prophet was with Mariyah and took an oath that he would not go near her. So, the kaffarah on him was because of the oath, not because he made something haram.” [10]

Verse 3: “When the Prophet confided to one of his wives a matter, but when she divulged it, and Allah apprised him about it, he announced [to her] part of it and disregarded part of it. So when he told her about it, she said, ‘Who informed you about it?’ He said, ‘The All-Knowing and the All-Aware informed me.’”

Ibn Mardaway narrates that Ali ibn Abi Talib said: “No dignified person would ever allow oneself to reveal every single detail of an incident [about their life, dignity, or honour] which is why Allah says, ‘he announced [to her] part of it and disregarded part of it.’” [10]

Verse 4: “If the two of you repent to Allah (it will be better for you), for your hearts have certainly swerved, and if you back each other against him, then [know that] Allah is indeed his guardian, and Jibrail, and the righteous among the faithful, and thereafter, the angels are his supporters.”

Asim ibn Humayd narrates from Abu Baseer: “I heard Abu Jafar reciting the verse, ‘If the two of you repent to Allah (it will be better for you) for your hearts have certainly swerved, and if you back each other against him, then [know that] Allah is indeed his guardian, and Jibrail, and the righteous among the faithful.’ He said Salih al-Momineen, ‘the righteous among the faithful,’ is Ali ibn Abi Talib.” [11]

Verse 6: “O you who have faith! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [assigned] angels, severe and mighty, who do not disobey whatever Allah has commanded them, and carry out what they are commanded.”

Muhammad ibn Udhafir narrates from Ishaq ibn Ammar, from Abd al-Ala Mawla Ale Saam from Abu Abdillah: “When this verse was revealed, ‘O you who have faith! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire,’ a Muslim man who was sitting, was crying, and he said, ‘I was too weak to save my own soul, now I am supposed to save my family?!’ The Prophet replied: ‘It will be enough if you order them to do what you order yourself to do, and forbid them from doing what you have forbidden yourself from doing.’” [12]

Samaah narrates from Abu Baseer about the verse, ‘Save yourselves and your families from a fire,’ that he asked the Imam, “How do I save them?” The Imam replied: “Order them to do what Allah has ordered and forbid them from doing what Allah has forbidden. If they obey you, you have saved them; and if they disobey you, you did whatever you were supposed to do.” [12]

Muhammad ibn al-Fudhayl narrates from Abu al-Sabbah al-Kanani: “I asked Abu Abdillah about the verse, ‘O you who have faith! Repent to Allah with sincere repentance.’ He replied: ‘The servant repents for a sin, and then he does not repeat it again.’”

Muhammad ibn al-Fudhayl said, “I asked Abul Hasan about it (the verse) and he replied, ‘He repents for a sin, and then he does not repeat it again.’” [12]

Salih ibn Sahl says, “I heard Abu Abdillah while he was saying, ‘Their light will emanate in front of them and on their right side.’ The light of the Imams of the believers on the Day of Judgement will emanate in front of the believers and on their right side [and it will guide them] until the believers settle down in their places in Heaven.” [13]
