Introduction
Name of Chapter and Reason for its Name
This chapter is called Surah Al-Najm (The star) because of the first verse which contains an oath by the star. [1]
Chapter Number
Surah Al-Najm is the 53rd chapter of the Holy Quran.
Number of Verses
This chapter contains 62 verses and is one of the four chapters with and obligatory sajdah(prostration). When the last verse of this chapter is recited, it becomes obligatory for the reciter to do sajdah. [2] [3]
Place of Revelation
The chapter of Al-Najm is Makki. [4] Although according to some exegetes the whole chapter is Makki, except for verse number 32:âThose who avoid major sins and indecencies.â [5] There is also a possibility that the entire chapter was revealed in Medina. [6]
Content
Important Concepts in this Chapter
Verses 1-18
These verses emphasize on the fact that the revelation and prophecy are from the Divine, and they contain the description of the ascension of the Prophet.
These verses state that the Quran was revealed from Allah and was delivered to the people without any deficiency or shortage by the Prophet. [7]
Some have said that these verses also describe the night of Meraj (ascention) and the revelation being verbal on that specific night. [8]
The phrase âone of the great powersâ in verse 5 which says: âtaught him by one of the great powersâ refers to Jibrail. [9] [10]
Verses 13-15 which say: âCertainly he saw it yet another time, by the lote tree of the ultimate boundary, near which is the Garden of Abodeâ refer to the second time that the Prophet saw the angel Jibrail in his real face. This took place during the Prophetâs ascension (Meraj). [11]
Verses 19-32
These verses explain the Oneness of Allah and the rejection of polytheism.
These verses start with a few word about Lat, Uzza and Manat (the three main idols). These idols were considered the statues of the angels of Allah and also the daughters of Him, according to the pagan beliefs. They also believed that the statues hadthe ability of intercession; and thus in these verses polytheism is criticized. [12] [13]
Explanation of the future life and the order to bow down before Allah:
The verse number 38 which says: âAnd that no bearer shall bear anotherâs burdenâ means that every person is responsible for the consequences of oppressing oneâs own soul and committing sins and no one is responsible for anyone elseâs actions. As well, a person will not be rewarded for anything except for what one strives for, which is mentioned in the next verse 39 that states: âThat nothing belongs to man except what he strives for.â [14] The word âthe final goalâ in verse 42 âthat the final goal is towards your Lordâ means that the end of all of the creations is to go back to Allah, and this is an evidence of the absolute Lordship of the Almighty Creator. [15] Some exegetes believe that the word âthe final goal or endâ refers to the Day of Judgement. [16] In the verse âthat it is He who enriches and grants possessionsâ - enrichment can be through giving and awarding, and granting possession can be giving one to the extent that one reaches contentment. It has been narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Maysarah, from Abu Amamah that he heard the Prophet say: (â¦) [7]
Verse 11: âThe heart did not deny what it saw.â

In Sahih Muslim it has been narrated from Abu Dharr that he said: âI asked the Prophet: âHave you ever seen your Lord?â He replied: âThere is a light that I see;â and based on another account: âI have seen a light.ââ [19]

It has been narrated from Muhammad ibn Kab, who narrates from some of the companions of the Prophet to have said that they said to the Prophet: âO Prophet of Allah, have you seen your Lord?â He said: âI have not seen him with my eyes, but I have seen him twice with my heart; and then he recited: âThen he drew nearer and nearer.ââ [19]
Verses 13-15: âCertainly he saw it yet another time, by the lote tree of the Ultimate Boundary, near which is the Garden of the Abode.â

Zerr ibn Hubaysh narrates from Ibn Masood about the verse âCertainly he saw it yet another time, by the lote tree of the ultimate boundaryâ in which he said that: âThe Prophet said: âI saw Jibrail and he had 600 wings which from every feather, sapphires were spattering.ââ This has a good chain of narrators, and Ahmad also said: âYahya ibn Adam has narrated from Shuraik, from Jami ibn Abu Rashid, from Abu Wail, from Abdullah to have said: âThe Prophet saw Jibrailâs real form and he had 600 wings and each wing covered the entire horizon,, and precious gems such as sapphires dropped from his wings and Allah knows better.ââ [20]

Ubay ibn Kab quotes the Prophet as having said: âWhoever recites it (Surah al-Najm) will be given the reward of ten good deeds for every person believed in or belied the Prophet.â [21]

Yazeed ibn Khalifah narrates from Abu Abdullah to have said that: âWhoever gets used to reciting (Surah) al-Najm every single day or every single night, will live a praised life among the people, and that person will have an abundant life and will become popular among the people.â [21]
Verse 1: âBy the star when it sets.â

In Al-Kaafi it has been narrated from al-Qummi, from his dad, from Ibn Abu Umayr, from Muhammad ibn Muslim to have said that: âI said to Abu Jafar:ââ¦? He replied that: âAllah can swear by whichever of His creations that He wants to, but His creations are only allowed to swear by His name. [22]
Verse 4: âIt is just a revelation that is revealed [to him].â

In Al-Kafi it has been narrated from Hisham, Hamad and others that: âWe heard Abu Abdullah say: âMy words are my fatherâs words, and my fatherâs words are my grandfatherâs words, and my grandfatherâs words are Husaynâs words, and Husaynâs words are Hasanâs words, and Hasanâs words are Aliâs words, and Aliâs words are the words of the Prophet, and the words of the Prophet are the words of Allah.ââ [22]
Verse 9: âUntil he was within two bow lengths or even nearer.â

Ibn Sinaan says in a narration that Abu Abdullah said: âThe Prophet was the closest to Allah among all of the creations. He reached a level that Jibrail told him on the day that he took him for the divine excursion that: âCome, O Muhammad you have reached a level which no Archangel or Prophet have ever reached.â If his soul and spirit was not from that place, then he would not have been able to reach that high. He was from Allah and Allah said: âUntil he was within two bow lengths or even nearerâ in fact he surely nearer.â [22]

In Al-Ihtijaaj in has been narrated from Ali ibn al-Husayn in a long narration that he said: âI am the son of he who (â¦) and passed the tree of the ultimate boundary and reached his Lord with the distance within two bow lengths or even nearer.â [22]
Verse 11: âThe heart did not deny what it saw.â

Muhammad ibn Fudhail said that he asked Abul Hasan: âDid the Prophet see Allah?â He replied: âYes, he saw Him with his heart. Do you not know what Allah said: âThe heart did not deny what it sawâ meaning that the eyes do not see Him, but the hearts see Him.â [23]
Verse 13: âCertainly he saw it yet another time, by the lote tree of the ultimate boundary.â
ÙÙÙÙÙÙØ¯Û¡ Ø±ÙØ¡ÙاÙÙ ÙÙØ²Û¡ÙÙØ©Ù Ø£ÙØ®Û¡Ø±ÙÙÙ° ١٣ Ø¹Ù ÙØ´Ø§Ù Ø¹Ù Ø£Ø¨Û Ø¹Ø¨Ø¯ اÙÙÙ ÙØ§Ù: ÙØ§Ù اÙÙØ¨Û ص: Ø§ÙØªÙÛØª Ø¥ÙÛ Ø³Ø¯Ø±Ø© اÙÙ ÙØªÙÛ- ٠إذا اÙÙØ±ÙØ© Ù ÙÙØ§ تظ٠أ٠ة Ù Ù Ø§ÙØ£Ù Ù - ÙÚ©ÙØª Ù Ù Ø±Ø¨Û Ú©ÙØ§Ø¨ ÙÙØ³Û٠أ٠أدÙÛ.
Hishaam narrates from Abu Abdullah to have quoted the Prophet as saying: âI reached the tree of the ultimate boundary and saw that each leaf from the tree cast a shadow on a group of people, and I was within two bow lengths or even nearer to Allah.â [24]
إس٠اعÛÙ Ø§ÙØ¬Ø¹ÙÛ Ø¹Ù Ø£Ø¨Û Ø¬Ø¹ÙØ± ÙÛ ØØ¯ÛØ« Ø·ÙÛÙ: ÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙØ§ اÙÙØªÙÙÙÛ Ø¨ÙÙ٠إÙÙÙÛ Ø³ÙØ¯ÙØ±ÙØ©Ù اÙÙÙ ÙÙÙØªÙÙÙÛ ØªÙØ®ÙÙÙÙÙ٠عÙÙÙÙÙ Ø¬ÙØ¨ÙØ±ÙØ¦ÙÛÙÙ ÙÙÙÙØ§ÙÙ Ø±ÙØ³ÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙ٠ص: ÛØ§ Ø¬ÙØ¨ÙØ±ÙØ¦ÙÛÙÙ ÙÙÛ ÙÙØ°Ùا اÙÙÙ ÙÙÙØ¶ÙØ¹Ù ØªÙØ®ÙذÙÙÙÙÙÛ ÙÙÙÙØ§Ù٠تÙÙÙØ¯ÙÙ٠٠أÙÙ ÙØ§Ù ÙÚ©- ÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÙØ¯Ù بÙÙÙØºÙØªÙ Ù ÙØ¨ÙÙÙØºØ§Ù- ÙÙÙ Ù ÛØ¨ÙÙÙØºÙÙÙ Ø£ÙØÙØ¯Ù Ù ÙÙÙ Ø®ÙÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙØ¨ÙÙÙÚ©- ÙÙØ±ÙØ£ÙÛØªÙ Ù ÙÙÙ ÙÙÙØ±Ù Ø±ÙØ¨ÙÙÛ ÙÙ ØÙاÙ٠بÙÛÙÙÛ Ù٠بÙÛÙÙÙÙ Ø§ÙØ³ÙÙØ¨ÙØ®ÙØ©Ù [Ø§ÙØªÙÙØ³ÙبÙÛØÙØ©Ù]Ø- ÙÙÙÙØªÙ: ÙÙ Ù ÙØ§ Ø§ÙØ³ÙÙØ¨ÙØ®ÙØ©Ù Ø¬ÙØ¹ÙÙÙØªÙ ÙÙØ¯Ùاک ÙÙØ£ÙÙÙÙ ÙÛ Ø¨ÙÙÙØ¬ÙÙÙÙ٠إÙÙÙÛ Ø§ÙÙØ£ÙØ±ÙØ¶Ù Ù٠أÙÙÙÙ ÙÛ Ø¨ÙÛØ¯ÙÙ٠إÙÙÙÛ Ø§ÙØ³ÙÙÙ ÙØ§Ø¡Ù- ÙÙ ÙÙÙÙ ÛÙÙÙÙ٠جÙÙÙØ§ÙÙ Ø±ÙØ¨ÙÙÛ Ø«ÙÙÙØ§Ø«Ù Ù ÙØ±ÙÙØ§Øª.
Ismail al-Jufi narrates from Abu Jafar in a long narration to have said: âWhen he (the Prophet) reached the tree of the ultimate boundary, Jibrail was left behind. The Prophet said: âO Jibrail, are you betraying me at this point?â He said: âI have reached a place where no one from the creations of Allah has ever reached before you, and I saw a light from my Lord and suddenly a marsh (swamp) (al-sabkhah) separated me from Him.â âWhat is a marsh (al-sabkhah)?â He nodded towards the earth and pointed to the sky with his fingers while saying: âThe glory of my Lordâ three times.â [24]
Verse 39: âThat nothing belongs to man except what he strives for.â
ÙÙØ£ÙÙ ÙÙÙÙۡس٠ÙÙÙÛ¡Ø¥ÙÙØ³ÙÙ°Ù٠إÙÙÙÙØ§ Ù ÙØ§ Ø³ÙØ¹ÙÙÙ° ٣٩ ع٠عبد اÙÙÙ Ø¨Ù Ø³ÙØ§Ù Ø¹Ù Ø£Ø¨Û Ø¹Ø¨Ø¯ اÙÙÙ ÙØ§ÙÙ ÙÙØ§ÙÙ Ø±ÙØ³ÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙ٠ص ÛÙÙÙÙ٠اÙÙÙÙÙÙ Ø¹ÙØ²ÙÙ Ù٠جÙÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÚ© اÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÚ©ÙÙ Ø¨ÙØ§ÙÙÙ ÙØ¤ÙÙ ÙÙÙ Ø¥ÙØ°Ùا Ù ÙØ±ÙØ¶Ù Ø§Ú©ØªÙØ¨Ù ÙÙÙÙ Ù ÙØ§ Ú©ÙÙØªÙ تÙÚ©ØªÙØ¨Ù ÙÙÙÙ ÙÙÛ ØµÙØÙÙØªÙÙÙ ÙÙØ¥ÙÙÙÙÛ Ø£ÙÙÙØ§ اÙÙÙØ°ÙÛ ØµÙÛØ±ÙتÙÙÙ ÙÙÛ ØÙØ¨ÙØ§ÙÙÛ.
In a tradition Abdullah ibn Sinaan narrates from Abu Abdillah who quotes the Prophet to have said: âWhen a believer becomes ill, Allah tells the angel appointed for him to write for him what you used to write for him when he was healthy; for I am the one who caused him to become sick.â [25]
Ù ÙÛ Ø§ÙØ®ØµØ§ÙØ Ø¹Ù Ø£Ø¨Û Ø¹Ø¨Ø¯ اÙÙÙ ÙØ§Ù: ÙÙÛØ³Ù ÛØªÙØ¨ÙØ¹Ù Ø§ÙØ±ÙÙØ¬ÙÙÙ Ø¨ÙØ¹Ùد٠٠ÙÙÙØªÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙ٠اÙÙØ£ÙØ¬ÙØ±Ù Ø¥ÙÙÙÙØ§ Ø«ÙÙÙØ§Ø«Ù Ø®ÙØµÙاÙÙ ØµÙØ¯ÙÙÙØ©Ù Ø£ÙØ¬ÙØ±ÙØ§ÙÙØ§ ÙÙÛ ØÙÛØ§ØªÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÙÛ ØªÙØ¬ÙرÙÛ Ø¨ÙØ¹Ùد٠٠ÙÙÙØªÙÙ٠إÙÙÙÛ ÛÙÙ٠٠اÙÙÙÙÛØ§Ù ÙØ©Ù ØµÙØ¯ÙÙÙØ©Ù Ù ÙÙÙÙÙÙÙÙØ©Ù ÙÙØ§ تÙÙØ±Ùث٠أÙÙ٠سÙÙÙÙØ©Ù ÙÙØ¯ÙÛ Ø³ÙÙâÙØ§ ÙÙکاÙÙ ÛØ¹ÙÙ ÙÙ٠بÙÙÙØ§ Ù٠عÙÙ ÙÙÙ Ù ÙÙÙ Ø¨ÙØ¹ÙدÙÙ٠غÙÛØ±ÙÙ٠أÙÙÙ ÙÙÙÙØ¯Ù ØµÙØ§ÙÙØÙ ÛØ³ÙØªÙØºÙÙÙØ±Ù ÙÙÙÙ.
In Al-Khisaal, Abu Abdullah is narrated to have said: âMan will not be rewarded after death in any way except for three things: 1) A charity which he establised when he was alive and it continued after his death without being interrupted nor inherited until the Day of Judgement; 2) He started a good tradition which people acted upon and continued after his death; and 3) A righteous child who asked for his forgiveness (after his death).â [25]
