Important Concepts in this Chapter
Verses 1-3
A reference and explanation is made about the characteristics of the deniers. Ruyat is defined as seeing with the physical eyes, or insight and deep recognition. [4] The characteristics of the deniers in these verses are those who reject the orphans with force and oppression, as well as not having an inclination towards feeding the destitute. [8] [9] By using the syntax of the words âTa am al-Miskeenâ in verse 2 - ?the feeding of the destitute can be taken as a reminder of the ownership of the destitute with regard to feeding. [10]
Verses 4-7
A reference is made to those who take the prayers lightly and an explanation of their characteristics.
Verse 5 which states: ââ¦but are heedless of their prayersâ means those who are heedless of their prayers or those who take it lightly, or it is in relation to those who do not display feeling towards the lapse of the time of prayer, or those who pray sometimes on certain occasions, or those who delay their prayers after the time sets in. [9] [10] It also refers to those who pray in the public eye, but in private they miss their prayers. [11]
Verse 6 says: ââwho show offâ means those who worship so that people may see them, and this is one of the characteristics of those who are careless about their prayers. [12]
The word Maun means financial aid to others such as loans, donations, and lending money, [12] or it has also been said that the intended meaning of Maun is zakah which is obligatory [to pay] on wealth. [9] [13]
Controversial Verses in this Chapter
As a footnote to verse 5, âbut are heedless of their prayersâ a discussion regarding whether the Prophet can make a mistake in his prayers has been propounded - and this is an important theological discussion. If the difference between âheedless of their prayersâ and âheedless in their prayersâ is understood, then in the former case it is related to taking oneâs prayers lightly, and in the latter case it is a reference to mistakes which one makes in the prayers which occurs due to the whisperings of Satan. Some people believe that the Prophet was affected by a mistake by which is meant forgetfulness. [7]

He sits watching the sun until it is between the two horns of Satan, then he stands and pecks four (rakat) and he does not remember Allah (in them) except very little.â [15]

That is, he must say Salaam, and the other must reply and not prevent him from the Maun.â I asked, âO Prophet, what is Maun?â He replied, â[It is] rocks, iron, water and any other thing (which is a necessity).ââ [17]
