According to these verses, Muslims are encouraged to give charity in the way of Allah and those who do so will be rewarded accordingly. Those who do not give charity in the way of Allah or give charity to show off to people are reproached in these verses. Giving assistance to show off is indeed not considered to be in the way of Allah. [14]

[20]
Verses 88-100
Encourages the Muslims to fight against the hypocrites.
These verses were revealed in order for the Muslims to fight the hypocrites and to abstain from doubting and hesitation. Muslims were doubting whether to fight the hypocrites of not and had different opinions among them. Allah says in these verses that the Muslims should either migrate or fight the hypocrites and has prevented them from interceding for them. [21]

Benefits of Reciting this Surah
The Prophet has said: “Whoever recites Surah al-Nisaa is like a person who gives charity to every believer ( …) and he will be given the reward of one who frees a slave, and will be saved from polytheism, and will be among those whom Allah has forgiven.” [22]
Verse 6: “Test the orphans when they reach the age of marriage. Then if you discern in them maturity, deliver to them their property. And do not consume it lavishly and hastily lest they should grow up. As for him who is well-off, let him be abstemious, and as for him who is poor, let him eat in an honourable manner. And when you deliver to them their property, take witnesses over them, and Allah suffices as a Reckoner.”
In the book Sahih Muslim, it has been narrated from the Prophet who said: “O Abu Dharr! I see you as a weak person and I like for you the same thing that I like for myself, so do not rule on two groups and do not accept the guardianship of the orphan’s money.” [23]

Consort with them in an honourable manner; and should you dislike them, maybe you dislike something while Allah invests it with an abundant good.”

Verse 32: “Do not covet the advantage, which Allah has given some of you over others. To men belongs a share of what they have earned, and to women a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah for His bounty. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.”

Verse 34: “Men are the managers of women, because of the advantage that Allah has granted some of them over others, and by virtue of their spending out of their wealth. Righteous women are obedient and watchful in the absence [of their husbands] in guarding what Allah has enjoined [them] to guard. As for those [wives] whose misconduct you fear, [first] advise them, and [if ineffective] then keep away from them in the bed, and [as the last resort] chastise them. Then if they obey you, do not seek any course [of action] against them. Indeed Allah is All-Exalted, All-Great.”
Ibn Jurayr narrates from Al-Muthanna, from Abu Saleh, from Abu Mashar, from Saeed ibn Abi Saeed al-Miqbari, from Abu Hurayrah who quotes the Prophet as having said: “The best of women is the one who when you look at her she makes you feel happy, when you command her to do something she obeys you, and when you are away from her she protects herself and your wealth.” [31]
Verse 36: “Worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, and be good to (your) parents, the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the near neighbour and the distant neighbour, the companion at your side, the traveler, and your slaves. Indeed Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.”
Imam Ahmad narrates from Muhammad ibn Jafar, from Shubah ibn Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Zayd to have heard from his father, Muhammad, from Abdullah ibn Umar who quotes the Prophet as having said: “Jibrail constantly recommended me to (take care) of the neighbours to such an extent that I thought the neighbours will inherit from one another.” [32]
Verse 37: “Those who are [themselves] stingy and bid [other] people to be stingy, and conceal whatever Allah has given them out of His bounty; and We have prepared for the faithless a humiliating punishment.”

In the Sahihayn, Zayd ibn Aslam narrates from Ata ibn Yasar, from Abu Saeed al-Khudri, from the Prophet a long narration about intercession in which the Prophet says: “Allah will say: ‘Go back and if you see anyone who has even a little bit of faith in his heart, then get him out of the fire.” [34]
Verse 48: “Indeed Allah does not forgive that partners should be ascribed to Him, but He forgives anything besides that to whomever He wishes. Whoever ascribes partners to Allah has indeed fabricated [a lie] in great sinfulness.”
Imam Ahmad narrates from Yazeed ibn Haroon, from Sadaqah ibn Musa, from Abu Imran al-Jawni, from Yazeed ibn Badnus, from Aisha who quotes the Prophet as having said: “There are three books with Allah: a book (of the peoples’ deeds) which Allah will not pay attention to what is in it (on the Day of Judgement), a book which Allah will not ignore anything that is in it (on the Day of Judgement), and a book which Allah will not forgive anything that is in it (on the Day of Judgement). The first one is polytheism which Allah will not forgive (if it is in one’s deeds), because Allah says: ‘Indeed Allah does not forgive that partners should be ascribed to Him’ and ‘Indeed whoever ascribes partners to Allah, Allah shall forbid him [entry into] the Paradise.’ The second one is a person who oppresses himself by disobeying Allah in what is obligatory upon him, such as not fasting for a day, or missing a prayer which Allah will not pay attention to, and will forgive him for that and will ignore it if he wants to. The third one is oppressing one another which Allah will not ignore any of it (on the Day of Judgement), and (the punishment for which is) retaliation with no doubt.” [35]
Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Bazzar narrates from Ahmad ibn Maalik, from Zaidah ibn Abi al-Raqqad, from Ziyad al-Numairi, from Anas ibn Maalik, from the Prophet who said: “Oppression is of three types - an oppression which Allah will not forgive, an oppression which Allah will forgive, and an oppression which Allah will not ignore (on the Day of Judgement). The one which Allah will not forgive is polytheism, because ‘Polytheism is indeed a great injustice.’ The one which Allah will forgive is a person who oppresses oneself by disobeying Him in what is obligatory upon him; and the one which Allah will not overlook is people oppressing one another until they retaliate.” [35]
Verse 49: “Have you not regarded those who style themselves as pure? Indeed, it is Allah who purifies whomsoever He wishes, and they will not be wronged [so much as] a single date-thread.”
Imam Ahmad narrates from Muhammad ibn Jafar, from Shubah and Hajjaj, from Shubah, from Sad ibn Ibrahim, from Mobad al-Juhni to have said: (not translated at all) [36]
Verse 59: “O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you. And if you dispute concerning anything, then refer it to Allah and the Apostle, if you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more favourable in outcome.”
Ibn Jurayr narrates from Ali ibn Muslim al-Tusi, from Ibn Abu Fudayk, from Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Urwah, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from Abu Saleh al-Samaan, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet to have said: “There will be governers after me who will rule over you. The good governers will rule over you according to their goodness, and the bad ones according to their filthiness. So listen to what they say and obey them in what is according to the truth, and pray behind them; if they do good it is going to be good for you and themselves, and if they do wrong then it is still going to be good for you but bad for themselves.” [37]
Verse 79: “Whatever good befalls you is from Allah; and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself. We sent you as an apostle to mankind, and Allah suffices as a Witness.”

Verse 95: “Not equal are those of the faithful who sit back - excepting those who suffer from some disability - and those who wage jihad in the way of Allah with their possession and their persons. Allah has graced those who wage jihad with their possessions and their persons by a degree over those who sit back; yet to each Allah has promised the best reward, and Allah has graced those who wage jihad over those who sit back with a great reward”

It has been narrated in the Sahihayn from Abu Saeed al-Khudri, from the Prophet who said: “There are one hundred levels in heaven which Allah has provided for the warriors fighting in Allah’s path, and the distance between each of these levels is like the distance between the Heaven and the Earth.” [40]
Verse 97: “Indeed, those whom the angels take away while they are wronging themselves, they ask, ‘What state were you in?’ They will reply, ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ They will say, ‘Was not Allah’s Earth vast enough so that you might migrate in it?’ The refuge of such shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.”

In the Sahihayn there is a narration from Hishaam ibn Urwah, from his father, from Zaynab, the daughter of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah that the Prophet heard the noise of a quarrel outside the door of his house, so he went to them and said: “Indeed I am a human being and I judge according to what I hear [and see] and some of you may be more eloquent and persuasive in presenting their argument. So if I give someone’s right to another [wrongly] because of the latter’s presentation of the case, then it is going to be a piece of fire [for him] - either he takes it or he leaves it [and saves himself].” [43]

In Sahih Muslim it has been narrated from Ayaadh ibn Himaar to quote the Prophet of Allah as having said: “Allah said: ‘I have created My servants as Hunafaah (monotheists), then the Shayaateen (devils) come to them and lead them astray from their religion and what I have permitted for them is forbidden to them.’” [47]

Imam Maalik narrates from al-Ala ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Anas ibn Maalik to have quoted the Prophet as having said: “This is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite, this is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun until when it goes down between the two horns of the devil, and then he stands up and pecks out four rakat (for Asr) without remembering Allah during them except a little.” [50]

Verse 171: “O People of the Book! Do not exceed the bounds in your religion, and do not attribute anything to Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Isa son of Mariam, was only an apostle of Allah, and His Word that He cast towards Mariam and a spirit from Him. So have faith in Allah and His apostles, and do not say, ‘[Allah is] a trinity.’ Relinquish [such a creed]! That is better for you. Allah is but the One Allah. He is far too immaculate to have any son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah suffices as a Trustee.”

It has been narrated from the Prophet who said: “Allah said: ‘I am the All-Beneficent, I created blood relations (rahem) and named it after one of My names. So whoever connects with one’s relatives I will connect him to My mercy, and whoever cuts his relations with his relatives I will cut My mercy off from him.’” [55]

In the book Nahj al-Bayaan, it has been narrated from Amr ibn Abi al-Miqdaam, from his father who said: “I asked Abu Jafar - What was Eve created from?” He replied: “What do the people say?” I said: “They say that she was created from one of Adams’s ribs.” He said: “They are lying, was Allah unable to create her from anything other than his rib?” I said: “O son of the Prophet, then what was she created from?” He replied: “My father informed me from his fathers that Allah took a handful of clay and mixed it with His right hand - though both of His hands are His right hand - then He created Adam from that clay, and He created Eve from the remainder of that clay.” [56]
In the book Tafseer al-Ayaashi it has been narrated from al-Asbagh ibn Nabatah who heard Amir al-Momineen say: “Surely one of you becomes angry and is not conciliated until he enters the fire. Therefore, whoever of you becomes angry with his relative, should get closer to him, because womb (relationship) when touched by womb (relationship), calms one down; and it is suspended from the Throne, it rings (the Throne) as iron is rung [by striking at it], and cries out: ‘O Allah! Join him who joins me, and cut him off who cuts me off.’ It is the word of Allah in His book: ‘And fear Allah from whom you demand one another (your rights) and (be mindful of) your relationships, surely Allah is vigilant over you.’ Whoever becomes angry while he is standing should at once cling to the earth [meaning he should sit down], because it will remove the filth of the Satan.” [57]
Verse 9: “Let those fear [the result of mistreating orphans] who, were they to leave behind weak offspring, would be concerned on their account. So let them be wary of Allah, and let them speak upright words.”
Al-Ridha was asked: “What is the least amount of consuming the property of the orphans which will go under the threat of what is mentioned in the (above) verse?” He replied: “There is no difference in the amount, [that goes under the threat] if he is not intending to give them back the money.” [58]
Verse 10: “Indeed those who consume the property of the orphans wrongfully, only ingest fire into their bellies, and soon they will enter the Blaze.”
It has been narrated from Halabi, from Abu Abdullah who said: “It has been mentioned in Ali’s book that a person who consumes the property of the orphans wrongfully will face trouble in his children in this world because of what he did. Allah says: ‘Let those fear [the result of mistreating orphans] who were they to leave behind weak offspring, would be concerned on their account. So let them be wary of Allah, and let them speak upright words.’ But as for him in the Hereafter Allah says: ‘Indeed those who consume the property of the orphans wrongfully, only ingest fire into their bellies, and soon they will enter the Blaze.’” [59]
Verse 11: “Allah enjoins you concerning your children: for the male shall be the like of the share of two females, and if there be [two or] more than two females, then for them shall be two-thirds of what he leaves; but if she be alone, then for her shall be a half; and for each of his parents a sixth of what he leaves, if he has children; but if he has no children, and his parents are his [sole] heirs, then it shall be a third for his mother; but if he has brothers, then a sixth for his mother, after [paying off] any bequest he may have made or any debt [he may have incurred]. Your parents and your children - you do not know which of them is likelier to be beneficial for you. This is an ordinance from Allah. Indeed Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

The Prophet said: “Allah did not agree to give the distribution of shares to an Archangel, nor to a Prophet, but rather He took the responsibility Himself, and gave every rightful person the right that one deserves.” [60]

In regards to the verse: ‘…after [paying off] any bequest he may have made or any debt [he may have incurred,’ Ali says: “When you recite this verse, you will see that paying off the bequest is mentioned before paying off the debt, but the Prophet paid off his debt before he made a bequest.” [61]
Verse 18: “But [acceptance of] repentance is not for those who go on committing misdeeds: when death approaches any of them, he says, ‘I repent now.’ Nor is it for those who die while they are faithless. For such We have prepared a painful punishment.”

It has been narrated from Abu Abdullah with regards to this verse (not translated) [62]
The Prophet of Allah in the end of his speech said: “Whoever repents to Allah a year before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance.” Then he said: “A year is a long time - whoever repents to Allah a month before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance.” Then he said: “A month is a long time - whoever repents to Allah in a Friday before he dies, Allah will accept his repentance.” Then he said: “The last Friday is a long time as well, whoever repents to Allah a day before he dies Allah will accept his repentance.” Then he said: “One [whole] day is a lot - whoever repents to Allah an hour before he dies Allah will accept his repentance.” Then he said: “An hour is a long time - whoever repents to Allah while his soul has reached here (and he pointed to his throat), Allah will accept his repentance.” [62]
In that [book], according to Sunni and Shia traditions, it has been narrated from Ibn Wahab who quotes Abu Abdullah as having said: “When a person sincerely repents to Allah, Allah will love him and cover up for him [his evil actions] in this world, and in the Hereafter.” I said: “How does He going to cover them for him?” He replied: “He will make the two angels forget what they recorded in regards to his sins, and He will reveal to his body to hide what it knows about his sins, and He will say to the parts of the ground which he committed sins on to hide what sins he committed upon them; and he will meet Allah [on the Day of Judgement] while there will be nothing to witness against him.” [63]
Verse 24: “And married women, except your slave-women. This is Allah’s ordinance for you. As to other than these, it is lawful for you to seek [temporary union with them] with your wealth, in wedlock, not in license. For the enjoyment you have had from them thereby, give them their dowries, by way of settlement, and there is no sin upon you in what you may agree upon after the settlement. Indeed Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”

It has been narrated from Imran ibn al-Husayn who said: “The ruling for mutah (temporary marriage) was revealed and there was not any other verse after that to abrogate it and the Prophet recommended us to do it (mutah), so we did mutah and the Prophet did it as well, and he did not prevent us from doing it; but after the Prophet someone said something [different to what the Prophet said] based on his own opinion.” [64]
Verse 31: “If you avoid the major sins that you are forbidden, We will absolve you of your misdeeds and admit you to a noble abode.”
It has been narrated in Al-Kaafi from al-Sadiq who said: “The major sins are the sins which Allah has made the punishment of the hell fire indispencable for those who commit them.” [65]
Verse 32: “Do not covet the advantage, which Allah has given some of you over others. To men belongs a share of what they have earned, and to women a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah for His bounty. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.”
One should not say: “I wish that what has been given to such and such person from wealth and blessings and a beautiful wife was given to me instead (of the other person); for this is jealousy. But it is okay to say that O Allah grant me the same thing [which you granted him].” [66]
It has been narrated from Ibn Masood, from the Prophet who said: “Ask Allah for His bounties, for surely He likes to be asked from, and the best worship is to await relief.” [66]
Verse 36: “Worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, and be good to your parents, the relatives, the orphans, the needy, the near neighbour and the distant neighbour, the companion at your side, the traveler, and your slaves. Indeed Allah does not like those who are arrogant and boastful.”

It has been narrated from the Prophet who said: “There are three groups of neighbours: the first group are neighbours who have a few rights - the first is the right of being your neighbour, second is the right of being your relative, and third is the right of being Muslim. The second group of neighbours are those who have two rights - first is the right of being your neighbour, and the second is the right of being Muslim. The third group are those neighbours who have only one right - and that is being your neighbour, and they are the polytheists from the Ahl al-Kitab.” [67]

Jabir narrates from the Prophet to have said: “There is charity in every good deed. One of the good deeds is to meet your brother [in religion] with a cheerful look, and another good deed is to extend a helping hand to your brother (who is need).” [67]
Verse 58: “Indeed Allah commands you to deliver the trusts to their [rightful] owners, and to judge with fairness when you judge between people. Excellent indeed is what Allah advises you. Indeed Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.”

In the book Al-Durr al-Manthur it has been narrated from Saeed ibn Mansoor, and Firyabi, and Ibn Jarir, and Ibn al-Munthir and Ibn Abu Haatim, from Ali ibn Abi Talib who said: “It is a must for an Imam [Islamic Leader] to judge according to what Allah has sent, and to deliver the trusts; and if he acts accordingly then it will be a must for the people to listen to him and obey him and to answer when summoned.” [68]
Verse 59: “O you who have faith! Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you. And if you dispute concerning anything, refer it to Allah and the Apostle, if you have faith in Allah and the Last Day. That is better and more favourable in outcome.”

It has been narrated from al-Baqir and al-Sadiq who said: “Those who are vested with authority are the Imams from Ale Muhammad (the family of the Prophet.). [69]
In the book Tafseer al-Ayaashi, it has been narrated from Abdullah ibn Ajlaan, from Abu Jafar in the explanation of the verse: ‘Obey Allah and obey the Apostle and those vested with authority among you’ to have said: “This verse is about Ali and the Imams which Allah appointed in the same position as the Prophets, except that they do not make things lawful, nor do they prohibit things.” [70]
In the book Al-Abaqaat it has been narrated from the book Yanaabi al-Mawaddah, which is written by al-Shaykh Sulayman ibn Ibrahim al-Balkhi, from the book al-Manaaqeb, which is written by Sulaym ibn Qays al-Hilaali, from a narration from Ali to have said: “The smallest thing which makes a person go astray is to not know the decisive argument of Allah [the Imam] and his witness among the people, the one whom Allah has ordered people to obey him and made his guardianship an obligation upon the people.” [71]
Verse 65: “But no, by your Lord! They will not believe until they make you a judge in their disputes, then do not find within their hearts any dissent to your verdict and submit in full submission.”
It has been narrated from al-Sadiq who said: “If a group of people worship Allah and perform the prayers, give the charity, fast in the month of Ramadhan, and perform pilgrimage to the House, but say with regards to something that the Prophet did, [as an objection] - why did he not choose to do something else? Or even think it in their hearts [without mentioning it], they will become polytheists.” Then he recited this verse. [72]
Verse 69: “Whoever obeys Allah and the Apostle - they are with those whom Allah has blessed, including the Prophets, and the truthful, and the martyrs, and the righteous, and excellent companions are they!”
It has been narrated from al-Sadiq who said: “The believers are of two kinds: (One is) a believer who fulfills the conditions that Allah had imposed upon him - he will be with the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous, and excellent companions they are; and he will be among those who will intercede, and will not need intercession (by others); and he is among those who will not be inflicted with the terror of this world, nor of the Hereafter. (The other is) a believer who has made mistakes. He is like a green stalk which inclines to whatever direction the wind pushes it and then it returns to its position. He is among those who will be inflicted with the terrors of this world and that of the Hereafter, but he will be interceded for and he is on good.” [73]
Abu Baseer narrates from Abu Abdillah who said: “O Abu Muhammad, Allah has mentioned you in His Book,” then he recited this verse (verse 69) and continued: “The Messenger [mentioned in the verse] is the Prophet of Allah; and we are the truthful ones and the martyrs; and you are the righteous ones - so you should be known as the righteous ones the same way that Allah named you as righteous.” [74]
Verse 86: “When you are greeted with a salute, greet with a better one than it, or return it; indeed Allah takes account of all things.”
Al-Waahedi narrates from Abu Amaamah, from Maalik ibn al-Tayhaan who quotes the Prophet as having said: “Whoever greets someone by saying: ‘Assalamo Alaikum’ (Islamic way of saying Hello, which means: may peace be upon you) - ten good deeds will be written for him; and whoever says: ‘Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullah’ (meaning: may the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you) - twenty good deeds will be written for him; and whoever says: ‘Assalamo Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuh’ (may the peace and mercy of Allah and blessings be upon you) - will receive thirty good deeds.” [75]
Verse 103: “When you have finished the prayers, remember Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down, and when you feel secure, perform the [complete] prayers, for the prayer is indeed a timed prescription for the faithful.”
In Al-Kaafi through a chain of narrators from Dawood ibn Farqad who says: “I asked Abu Abdillah about the words of Allah, ‘surely prayer is a timed ordinance.’ He replied: ‘[It means] firm ordinance; however if you make haste a little or delay a little bit then it will do you no harm, provided that you do not neglect it altogether, because Allah, the Mighty, the Great, says: ‘neglecting the prayers and following the sensual desires, will certainly meet perdition.’” [76]
Verse 135: “O you who have faith! Be maintainers of justice and witnesses for the sake of Allah, even if it should be against yourselves or [your] parents and near relatives, and whether it be [someone] rich or poor, for Allah has a greater right over them. So do not follow [your] desires, lest you should be unfair, and if you distort [the testimony] or disregard [it], Allah is indeed well aware of what you do.”
It has been narrated in the book Tafseer al-Qummi from Abu Abdillah who said: “A believer has seven rights on another believer. The most obligatory of them is that a man should tell the truth, even if it goes against his own self or against his parents, and he should not deviate from the truth for anyone’s sake. Then he recited: ‘So do not follow [your] desires, lest you should be unfair, and if you distort [the testimony] or disregard [it]’ meaning (going away) from the truth.” [77]
Verse 140: “Certainly He has sent down to you in the Book that when you hear Allah’s signs being disbelieved and derided, do not sit with them until they engage in some other discourse, or else you [too] will be like them. Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and the faithless in hell all together.”
It has been narrated in the book Tafseer al-Ayaashi from Muhammad ibn al-Fudhail, from Abu al-Hasan al-Ridha about the word of Allah: ‘Certainly He has sent down to you in the Book that when you hear Allah’s signs…(up until) you [too] will be like them’ that he said: “If you hear someone denying the truth and disbelieving it and they are close with the disbelievers, then stay away from them and do not be in their company.” [78]
Verse 159: “There is none among the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death; and on the Day of Resurrection, he will be a witness against them.”
It have been narrated from Ibn Sinaan, from Abu Abdillah about the words of Allah on Prophet Isa: ‘There is none among the People of the Book but will surely believe in him before his death…’ that he said: “The belief of the People of the Book will be for Muhammad, peace be upon him and his family.” [79]
