Battle of Buhran in Wadi al-Fur’
Time and Place
This battle took place a few nights before the beginning of the month of Jamadi al-Awwal, in the year 3 A.H. in the area of Buhran. [1] Buhran is located in the valley of Fur’ and the distance between Fur’ and Medina is 8 stations. [2]
Reasons behind the Battle
Waqidi reports from Zuhra that:
“The Messenger of Allah got news that a large group of people from Bani Sulaym in Buhran are planning a conspiracy against him.” [1]
Details of the Battle
Appointment of a representative in Medina on behalf of the Prophet
At the time of the Prophet’s departure from Medina towards Buhran, he appointed Abdullah bin Umm Maktum as his representative in Medina. [1]
The Muslims’ movement towards Buhran
The Prophet, along with three hundred of his companions quickly left Medina and reached Buhran in one night. They saw a man from the tribe of Bani Sulaym there and interrogated him about their nefarious plans to which the man replied,
“They have all scattered and have returned back to their own places of dwelling.”
Once the Prophet entered Buhran, he saw that there was no one there, and so remained there for ten days. When he saw that nothing odd was happening, he returned back to Medina. [3]
